Surfing is the ultimate California sport. In a split second it's possible for everything to come together in a spectacular way or be shattered into an unintentional mess and, after years of playing with the best the surfing pro turned instructor Duran Barr is now ready to help others experience the same excitement.

The family was born and raised living in Carlsbad, Barr now lives and is employed in Oceanside managing the North County Surf Academy -an area from where he's seen the massive growth of the region over the past few years. Barr's grandparents first settled in the region due to its close proximity to an army station, and both of his parents lived on the beach in Oceanside as well. His father, David Barr, competed in the 1980s, and is now famous for his surfboard shaping.

In a recent interview, Barr stated that the he seemed "destined" to be a surfer due to his family's background.

"I began surfing when I was able to walk or perhaps earlier even in the womb of my mother," he said. "My father was an experienced surfer and traveling and he paved the way for the development of San Diego surfing and competing and put San Diego on the map at a more prestigious stage. The family I came from was popular local surfing family, and I was a surfer right from the beginning."

In a recent interview, Barr said that Barr in a recent interview, he was "destined" to be a surfer because of his background as a family man.

"I began surfing when I was able to walk or, if you're lucky, earlier when I was still in the womb with my mother," he said. "My father was an experienced surfer and traveling which is why he was instrumental in paving the way for lots of San Diego surfing and competing and put San Diego on the map at a much more prestigious stage. My family was a popular surfing family in the local area, so it was my life right from the beginning."

With the current surge of surfing culture's popularity -it was recently added into the Olympics as well as another iconic San Diego activity, skateboarding -skateboarding - Oceanside has become a household name as a place to visit not only for SoCal surfers, but also for people who live in rural areas and want to experience an authentic surf town. Two recently launched hotels in the region The Seabird, a classic family resort known as The Seabird and a more modern, adult-oriented equivalent, Mission Pacific, have also sparked interest in the coastal city.

For Barr who is a partner with these establishments to offer surfing lessons for guests has proved to be a boon for his business that is just beginning, and also a chance to ensure that newcomers are taught how to behave in a safe and respectful manner. "I'm happy about it and extremely blessed that I can help change the way surf lessons are taught within my local community," he said. "The hotel have performed an excellent job in reaching out to the right people and bringing the right people on board to ensure that the locals respect the fact that they are there. If they were to bring in a surf shop outside from, for instance, La Jolla, we would be all upset."

The hiring of Duran to provide guests with an experience of the surfing culture in the local area isn't only thing these resorts are doing well. In the fall an incredibly anticipated restaurant by the renowned Mexican chef Roberto Alcocer is slated to begin operations. It's named for Valle, which is the name of Valle de Guadalupe region -the home of AlcocerValle Valle could be the first American concept by one of Mexico's most modern chefs. Mission Pacific's outdoor Rooftop Bar is already an iconic spot for sunsets during happy hour. The bar offers the menu offering a variety of tacos, tostadas and tortas. It also serves delicious grilled oysters which are also overseen by Alcocer.

In the opposite direction, The Seabird offers a larger pool with all-day beverage cocktails, wine and cocktail service provided by The Shelter Club, along with a menu that includes the classics of the pool, such as Nachos with chicken, chicken tenders salads and burgers. The restaurant is restricted to hotel guests. This makes the pool more of a retreat, especially when you choose to spend the day in the private cabana. If drinking and eating at the pool with the view of the ocean is what you are looking for and you're looking for a relaxing, casual resort is sure to please. If you want feeling the beach sand beneath their feet just an inch to the beach and get beach umbrellas, towels, and chairs from the Seabird Tent, which has been staked out to equip guests with everything they require to take pleasure in the water and sun.
